Part III: Dusk

Jessica’s life changed with a phone call.

The fashion editor had called a break to consult with her lead photographer on the vision of the photoshoot they were doing for a magazine page, giving Jessica time off sore knees from getting those shots that required a little bit of flexibility than her life with Tiffany had trained her for.

Walking out of the restroom, she plucked her vibrating phone from her back pocket and raised it up to her ear. “Hey, babe,”

“Mmm, you sound tired,” Tiffany yawned. Jessica grinned at the irony.

“A bit,” she stopped to look out the large windows along the hall. Seoul fanned out beneath her. If Tiffany were there, she’d drag Jessica away from the window before she fell through. Tiffany hated heights.

“I’ll make dinner tonight,”

Jessica cocked an eyebrow. “Oh?”

“Uh huh,” she took in a breath, “I invited the new assistant coach over for dinner, so I wanted to call and let you know that you don’t have to rush home because I’ll get everything started and set up before she shows up, but I still need you to come before she does to make sure I made everything right.”

Jessica laughed. “Everyone loves your baking,”

“Baby, we can’t feed our guest with sugar cookies,” Tiffany deadpanned.

Jessica grinned. “You know I’m a terrible cook,”

“You’re a good taste tester,”

“Why, thank you,” Jessica rolled her eyes as Tiffany snickered. “Kimbap? Order out? Anything you make will be fine, but I have to go,”

“When will you be home?”

“Not too late,”

She heard the sound of dishes clinking on Tiffany’s end. “I need your taste buds before she comes over,”

“Trust me,” Jessica lowered her voice, feeling her cheeks warm up despite how many times they had said these sort of things over the phone. “You’ll get a lot more than just my taste buds,”

Tiffany laughed, the creak of their pantry door opening in the background. ”Get back to work, dirty girl,”

“Love you too, Fany,”

“Love you, Jessi,”

-/-/-/-

Lee Soonkyu was a cutie.

Jessica glanced back into the dining area where their guest – who preferred to go by Sunny – sat at the dining table talking adamantly with Tiffany while she rinsed the dishes.

She had been a pleasure, too much of a pleasure, and surprisingly polite. Though versed in the world of athletics, Sunny had a number of talents. One of them was having Jessica’s sides and Tiffany’s throat hurt from laughing the entire night.

She was bright, smiley, with a smile sweet like candy. In an odd way, she reminded Jessica of Tiffany - if only because Sunny could pull an eye smile nearly as outrageous as her girlfriend. But Tiffany’s smile beamed a thousand watts whereas Sunny’s was just scratching past nine hundred.

But maybe she was a little biased.

“Do you remember Yoona?” Sunny’s voice rang out as she pulled a strange face.

Jessica turned around at the last minute to see what was causing Tiffany’s laughter to rise to the ruckus level. She wondered if the joggers could hear them from the streets, and why the neighbors hadn’t come over to complain yet

“I say we make her the anchor,” said Tiffany, sobering.

“Hmm,” Sunny hummed through a gulp of alcohol she had brought for the occasion. “Yuri has more power,”

“She has the technique, but Yoona has the speed…”

Jessica smiled, turning away from the two as they dove into talk about the high school swim team Tiffany coached. It made Jessica proud hearing the excitement in her voice as she went on and on about the girls she had gotten to hand pick herself for the relay team. And what a wonderful group they were.

Glancing at the calendar, Jessica noted the next meet. Tiffany always brought the team over afterward for pizza. The house would be filled with laughter and stories for hours until the girls’ parents called them home and they left.

Setting the last of the dishes in the washer, Jessica noted the silence over the run of the tap. Leaning back, she looked into the dining area to see Tiffany holding the bottle of wine, tilting it so white liquid filled Sunny’s glass.

The assistant coach held the glass steady, her eyes focused on Tiffany, a smile tugging the corner of her lips as she blinked up at Tiffany through thick lashes.

“Go easy,” said Tiffany, setting the bottle down.

Sunny laughed, tossing back her auburn hair, and held up her glass as that smile spread along her lips. “Oh, I never go easy,” she winked.

Tiffany rolled her eyes, picking up her own glass and finished it off as they laughed. As if she felt her eyes, Tiffany looked over, her eyes creasing as she smiled. Jessica offered a grin back.

“Jessi, come join us,”

Sunny looked up, waving a hand, motioning for Jessica to come to the table. “Yeah, there’s plenty to drink,”

“That’s okay, you two can finish,”

“You sure?” Asked Sunny, swishing the wine in her glass. “Wouldn’t want to leave you out.”

“Well,” she flicked her eyes to Tiffany. Tiffany winked back at her, flashing that smug grin over the edge of her glass. “Okay. Maybe one more glass,”

Grabbing a wine glass from the cabinet, she took her place next to Tiffany, twining their fingers together beneath the table.

“So, Sunny,” started Jessica, leaning her elbow on the table. “Where are you from?”

-/-/-/-

“She seems nice,” said Jessica, editing pictures in one of the editing cubicles.

She glanced over her shoulder, looking back at Tiffany who sat on the desk just behind her. A bento box of a shared lunch brought by Tiffany sat still full of carrots and celery beside her.

“You two get along. Better than your last assistant,”

Tiffany scoffed, picking up one of the carrots and popped it into her mouth. “Don’t remind me,”

Sohee wasn’t bad, per say. She did what was required of her and always did it right, but their personalities clashed. Tiffany was high, loud, and fast. Sohee was somber, quiet, and patient with the subtle attitude that could easily go unnoticed if you weren’t well versed in the dictionary of Ahn Sohee facial expressions.

“She might get your team to nationals this year,”

She heard Tiffany cough, tone appalled. “I am more than capable-“

“I know, babe. I know,” Jessica grinned, giving her a reassuring smile.

Tiffany laughed, pushing off the desk and placed her hands on Jessica's shoulders. “So she checks off?”

“I...,” she took a moment to concentrate as she slid the cursor along the screen to remove the tiny hair of a blemish that was on one of the model’s face.
”I don’t see why not. Is there something wrong with her?"

"Hmm, no," Tiffany hummed, her fingers massaging into Jessica's shoulders, smoothing out the tight knots she had accumulated from taking pictures all morning.

“Don’t be too demanding," said Jessica, leaning back into the touch. She screwed up her eyes, head titling back slightly to see Tiffany purse her lips down at her. "You know how you can get,”

“You never complain,” she smirked, sliding her hands off Jessica's shoulders and down her arms.

Jessica tilted her head as Tiffany rested a chin on her shoulder, arms locking around her. “I do, you just ignore it,”

“Because I know how much you love it even though you’re begging me to-”

“-Baby," Jessica warned, feeling heat pool at the base of her stomach.

Tiffany touched her lips to the side of Jessica's neck. "Am I wrong?"

"No, but- Tiffany," she whined, hand gripping the mouse and body forming a new sort of tension. “I need to concentrate,”

“You can multitask,” Tiffany purred, tongue dragging up the soft skin of her ear.

Jessica shuddered. “Wait until we get home and I can show you just how good I am at multitasking,”

"Why not now?" She heard the smile in Tiffany’s voice as her hand reached the clasp of Jessica's dress pants.

"Tiffany," Jessica hissed, gripping Tiffany’s wrist, but it couldn't stop her skilled fingers from popping the clasp open and tugging down her zipper. "We can't,"

"Just edit," Tiffany kissed her cheek, fingers grazing down over her underwear. Jessica felt her legs split open despite herself. "I’ll make it quick,"

"If I lose my job-" her words were cut off as Tiffany took her lips, drinking in her moan as fingers started their work.

Jessica couldn't help but blush when the chief editor complimented her on her work once the new magazine issue hit the stands.

-/-/-/-

Jessica sat in the bleachers. She watched as Tiffany spoke quick and precise to a dripping Yoona, who just climbed out of the pool. Her arms motioned with her words and Yoona nodded, her shoulders slowing down as she finally caught her breath.

“Fighting!” Tiffany pumped her fist and slapped Yoona on the back.

Water splashed as the swimmer dove off the blocks, putting the new suggestions into her technique as she raced along the pool with Tiffany jogging along beside it, calling out and cheering her on.

“Here,”

Jessica turned to see Sunny holding out a styrofoam cup of steaming green tea to her.

“Thank you,” Jessica took it while Sunny sat down on the bench beside her, sipping her own cup.

Both pairs of eyes focused down at the pool where Tiffany crouched down to talk to Yoona who held herself on the edge, nodding up to Tiffany.

“Relentless,” said Jessica, watching Yoona take to the waters while Tiffany clapped her on.

“The girls needed someone who challenged them,” said Sunny. “She’s not afraid to push them when she knows they could do better.”

“She always had a way with drawing the best out of someone,”

“Mmm,” Sunny hummed around a mouthful of tea. She leaned forward, using a hand to cup her mouth as she yelled an encouraging, “Yoona-yah, fighting!” Down to the girl climbing out of the pool.

Tiffany tossed her a towel and scattered the swimmer’s hair with a hand. Tossing up a wave to Jessica, she followed Yoona out of the stadium to gather her things from the office down the hall.

The buzz of the overhead lights filled the silence. Jessica shifted on the aluminum, eyes drawn down to the water. The place reminded her so much of the night with Tiffany during the week-long trip. She felt herself shudder where she sat, body channeling the feeling of Tiffany’s lips falling onto hers for the first time.

“Why did she stop competing?” Asked Sunny, drawing over Jessica’s attention. She looked over to see her brows knitted together

Jessica shrugged. “She wanted to coach,”

“I don’t believe that,” Sunny scoffed, drinking the last of her tea and began to pick pieces of styrofoam off the cup. “No one that good quits to teach,”

Jessica let out a long sigh, dropping her gaze away from the curious ones of Sunny. ”She broke her ankle,“ she answered.

It hadn’t been the first time Jessica had thought it. It hadn’t been the first time she had doubted Tiffany’s adamant suggestions on being a coach, knowing the true reason was tied back to that event. The event that seemed to have changed Tiffany’s world though Jessica felt it hadn’t come to an end. Not completely.

But what fear Jessica could erase proved not to be enough to convince Tiffany to get back in the water. Seeing her be a coach, laughing, and pushing, and encouraging those girls to do and excel in something Tiffany felt as if she could no longer do seemed enough. It put a smile back on Tiffany’s face and Jessica allowed herself to be okay with that.

“I heard about that,” Sunny muttered beside her.

Jessica nodded, tilting her cup to her lips. “I tried, but she was stuck on teaching,”

“That’s it?” Sunny looked over at her, eyebrow cocked as if she didn’t believe her.

“Mhm,” she finished off the tea. Tiffany came in through the doors with her bag and coat, waving up to them in the bleachers. Jessica stood. “Make sure she doesn’t go too hard on them?”

“I’ll make sure to take all the heat myself,” Sunny laughed, following her down the steps and across the floor.!

“Sorry you had to wait,” said Tiffany, planting a kiss on Jessica’s lips. She felt herself blush, blinking away from Sunny who watched them with a smug grin. “See you Sunday,” she said to Sunny, threading her fingers in Jessica’s as she led them out.

The assistant coach nodded, shifting her own bag on her shoulder. “First place is ours,”

-/-/-/-

“Who’s hungry?”

“Me!” The table chorused, Sunny and Tiffany included, as Jessica brought boxes of pizza to the table and sat them down.

She stood back as the four girls flipped tops open and grabbed for slices to place on their plates. Jessica watched them, laughing at the girls that had brightened Tiffany’s life and filled Jessica with a warmth hoped never to fade away from their house.

There wasn’t a sad face over their second place win. It was enough to put them into the district meet that would take the team away for a week down south. Across the way, Jessica caught Tiffany’s eyes, both sharing the same thought of a party years ago.

“Sica, come eat,” Sunny beckoned.

“Here’s a chair, unnie,” Yuri yanked out the one beside her. The team’s captain, Victoria, pinched her in the arm receiving a scowl in return and a snicker from their fourth member, Luna.

Jessica eased herself down on the opposite side of Tiffany, blushing at the memory of Tiffany telling her about how Yuri’s jaw had practically hit the floor the first time she saw Jessica come up to the school.

She was flattered, really. But there was nothing that could make her flush so crimson than the way Tiffany stared at her in a foggy mirror that night long after the girls were gone and pizza boxes still cluttered the table being too tired to clean.

She had startled Jessica when she stepped out of the shower. Asking what Tiffany needed, she only got a shake of the head in return as Tiffany leaned up against the bathroom doorframe, watching Jessica towel her wet hair only dressed in a towel.

“You’re so beautiful,” said Tiffany.

Jessica blushed, watching Tiffany push off the doorframe and come up behind her. Fingers undid the tuck of the towel, pulling away and letting it drop to the floor, leaving Jessica standing in nothing more than dripping beads of water that slipped down her neck.

She had never felt so open – so exposed – than she did as Tiffany’s eyes traced her every feature. Like it was the night of their first time when Jessica squirmed and winced as Tiffany’s eyes racked over her body, soaking her in for the very first time and accepting her in completely. Flaws and all.

A hand slipping up her back made Jessica shiver. She could feel fingers trace a path from one freckle to the other, spelling out things of admiration unable to be spoken with words but came through in every touch.

Jessica watched them in the reflection until Tiffany’s eyes finally came up to meet hers. “Do you know that?”

Turning around, Jessica grabbed Tiffany’s hands and placed them on her waist where Tiffany instantly circled arms around her, pressing their bodies together.

Jessica brushed hair from warm eyes, peering up into them. “You won’t let me forget,”

A shy smile spread on Tiffany’s lips. There it was. Just like in the beginning. When awkwardness preceded passion, and they both tripped and stumbled and fumbled through the embarrassment and insecurities of letting the other see and have them completely.

“I love you,” Jessica whispered, curling her arms around Tiffany’s neck, and dipped her eyes down to meet the pair that sheepishly wouldn’t settle on her. “I love you so much,”

Tiffany bit her lip, lashes fluttering as cheeks tinted pink. “Kiss me?”

Jessica leaned in, shaping her lips to Tiffany’s cold pair.

She kept to herself, as Tiffany hiked her up and carried her out of the bathroom and onto the bed, that in all their years together…not once had Tiffany asked permission.

-/-/-/-

Just boarded the bus. The team did great! Be home late. Don’t wait up. Love you! – Fany

Jessica let out a breath, tucking her phone back into her pocket. Unlike the week-long college swim meets she had been able to come along, she now had to wait out the days alone until Tiffany returned.

“Just imagine if she went to teach abroad,” said Hyoyeon from across the table.

Seohyun frowned, licking the foam from her hot chocolate off her lips. “She’d take unnie with her,”

“Hmm,” Sooyoung hummed as she walked over to their booth. Her finger tapped on her lips, eyes bouncing from each one of them before settling on the empty space next to Jessica. “Someone’s missing,”

“Tiffany’s at a competition with the team,” said Jessica. Sooyoung frowned at Jessica’s crestfallen expression.

“But she comes back tonight,” Hyoyeon grinned, eyebrows wiggling. “You know what that means,”

“Hyo!” Jessica groaned, her cheeks flushing. She turned away from Sooyoung’s smirk that tugged at slightly red cheeks. “I’m sorry about her,”

“We all have that one friend,” Sooyoung teased and Jessica laughed.

“Why don’t you join us, unnie?” Asked Seohyun.

Sooyoung’s brows lifted. “Is that okay?”

“Sure,” Jessica nodded, seeing as the question was directed towards her.

Smiling, Sooyoung tugged off her apron as Jessica scooted over to make room for her.

The presence of a body was comforting to Jessica but the feel of it was different. Too different. Tiffany radiated with a sort of warmth that Jessica always leaned into, absorbing it into her pores and letting the cinnamon of her skin intoxicate her.

Whereas Sooyoung was foreign, a place holder for what wasn’t there, and only soothing from the coffee bean fragrance that must’ve etched itself into her DNA from working in the coffee shop for so long.

Big, round eyes looked over at Jessica topped with a shy smile. She offered her own, blinking away over to Hyoyeon who was watching the two. Jessica narrowed her eyes. Hyoyeon dismissed the glare by taking a drink from the straw plunged into drink.

“Hyoyeon, right?” Said Sooyoung looking over to the nodding blonde. “And Seohyun?”

The girls nodded.

“You should come to karaoke with us,” Seohyun offered.

“Yeah,” Hyoyeon nodded, finishing off her green tea smoothie. “That way Sica doesn’t feel like a third wheel.”

Sooyoung looked down at her fingers that played with a sugar packet. “I’m not much of a singer,”

“Neither is Sica,” Hyoyeon teased. Jessica rolled her eyes at the shared smirk between Sooyoung and her old roommate.

“Unnie, you’re no better,” muttered Seohyun. Hyoyeon stuck out her tongue. “You should come,”

Sooyoung glanced over to Jessica who just nodded. “I don’t get off until late,”

Seohyun shrugged. “We can wait,”

“Are you sure?”

“Could we get free drinks?” Asked Hyoyeon. Jessica kicked her under the table, thanking Sooyoung over and over as she brought them a new tray of drinks, promising she’d be done in no more than twenty minutes.

As music blared from crackly speakers, Jessica thought Sooyoung wasn’t Tiffany. But the way she confidently sang into the mic, sending them all into laugher as she mimicked the idols on the screen, Jessica didn’t once frown about the hours left before Tiffany would be home.

“Encore, encore!” Jessica had clapped her hands as Sooyoung bowed to them. It was only in that moment she saw the barista’s confidence slip away and a shy smile graze her lips.

-/-/-/-

Jessica stirred at the feeling of the mattress dipping and cool air touching her skin as the blanket was pulled away. Her senses were slow to react, sight being the most sluggish, as nails grazed the skin at her sides and tugged her nightshirt up and off.

The body shifted above her, head dipping down so lips touched the corner of Jessica’s mouth. The scent that filled her nose was too strong for this to be a dream.

Her eyes opened slowly, taking in Tiffany as she tugged down her shorts letting them get lost somewhere in the blankets. The clock on the nightstand by the bed blazed 4:26am.

“Fany?” Jessica blinked sleep from her eyes, focusing on the concentrated determination in her lover’s eyes.

Tiffany’s fingers were eager but gentle, snaking underwear down Jessica’s legs and smoothing up bare skin, so Jessica felt every print embedded in those hands.

The last thread of sleep snapped away as hands scooped Jessica up, drawing her back off the mattress so she leaned into Tiffany’s body that she just realized was just as bare and exposed as hers.

Lips found hers and Jessica breathed into the kiss, her mind clouding over with the care Tiffany put into the way she moved her tongue and maneuvered her lips. As if one wrong move and Jessica would push her away.

The thought was ridiculous but the hands smoothing all across her back were heavenly.

“Tiffany…”

“I love you,”

The words settled into Jessica the way they always did. They made her stomach flip and her body tremble, and the way Tiffany had rasped it in that moment left Jessica breathless.

“I love you more than anything,” Tiffany muttered against her lips.

“I will always love you more,” Jessica breathed.

Her head dropped back, neck stretching as her eyes held onto the ceiling. Teeth found her throat, and fingers slid down over her abs and past her naval. The tilt of Tiffany’s body laid her down and her weight kept her in place as Tiffany began working Jessica like a delicate, crafted instrument.

Jessica closed her eyes. Her every breath hitched in her throat. Everything was so sweet, so beautiful, so perfect.

She didn’t allow the fact that she saw tears in Tiffany’s eyes, as she reached that climax, to taint what they just had.

Oh, no. Some things could wait until the morning.

-/-/-/-

Jessica wasn’t ever the smartest one. Her sister had gotten the clever genes of the family but that didn’t mean she was dumb. For what she couldn’t explain in facts or calculation, she could figure out and understand in feelings and observations.

Both of them could lead her wrong.

Her feelings could steer her in the wrong direction should they be fueled more by flimsy emotions like fear and paranoia rather than logical evaluation and reason. And this was one of those times Jessica hoped her stomach was getting it wrong.

She prayed it was wrong. Because not once in her years of being with Tiffany had she ever doubted her in this way. Not anything to do with their relationship.

But here she was, walking through the halls of the high school Tiffany coached at, heading for her office at the end of the athletic hall.

She had walked the path many times brandishing lunches or coffee. She’d bring treats for the relay team and supplies for them to make and decorate posters to cheer on their sunbae’s during meets. But never had Jessica walked the memorized path holding onto a feeling. A bad feeling. One that had her pulse in her ears and stomach wound tight as she pushed open the locker room door.

“Hey, unnie,” greeted Luna as she picked up a blow dryer.

“Hey,” she peeked around into Tiffany’s office right inside the door of the locker room. “Where’s Tiffany?”

Luna shrugged just as a toilet flushed, and Yuri came sauntering over still in her work out suit. “I think her and Coach Lee are still at the pool going over notes.”

“Thanks,” Jessica smiled. The girls bowed to her as she left, taking to the hall once again.

The pool was farther down the way, connected to the athletic wing of the school by a long tunnel of a hallway. Jessica paced down it, heels clinking in time with her heartbeat.

At the end of the hall, light filtered out of an open door of the pool along with low voices.

Jessica peeked around the corner to see Tiffany sitting at a table next to Sunny while the relay team’s captain stood in front of them listening attentively.

“Neh,” Victoria bowed to her coaches before slinging up her bag and leaving. Jessica leaned away from the door as Victoria made her way toward her.

“Oh,” she bowed, seeing Jessica. “Hey, unnie,” she smiled and hurried off after Jessica offered a bow.

She was about to walk into the door when she heard Tiffany and Sunny talking again.

“She has potential,” said Tiffany, sigh in her voice. “I don’t know why she won’t take it.”

“Maybe it’s not what she wants,” Sunny came back. Jessica looked around the door to see the brunette move to sit on top of the table. “It’s not just a scholarship,”

“Then why waste time doing this if it’s not for more?”

“It’s not always just about the competition. It’s being a part of a team,”

“Yeah, well,” Tiffany huffed, back slumping against the chair.

“Hey, hey,” Sunny cooed, her fingers touching the underside of Tiffany’s chin tilting it up. “Are we sure this is about Victoria or is this about you too?” Tiffany remained silent. Sunny grinned. “Get back in the water,”

“Sunny,” Tiffany pulled away but Sunny cupped her face again, body sliding along the table closer.

“I know you miss it. Just go back. The kids will be fine without you,”

“Sunny, I can’t,”

“Yes, you can,” a thumb stroked Tiffany chin. “You just need a little more motivation,” A slight tilt of the chin followed by the cock of a head.

Jessica felt her entire body shatter into a million pieces as she watched Tiffany’s lips get taken by a pair that weren’t hers.

She felt every fiber of her vein seize, taking hold of her body and wringing it. Every inch of her skin burned and every vein was cold. Her lungs collapsed painfully in her chest, crushing against a heart that was beating too rapidly.

Jessica pulled away from the door, hand gripping the front of her shirt trying to hold onto the pieces that were slowly falling out.

She could feel them - literally feel them - as they dropped away one by one, tearing her apart and leaving her a jagged mess. She could feel them falling and clattering onto the floor, clattering like glass onto the linoleum.

She felt everything chip away. Everything. Every little piece until she was numb.

-/-/-/-

Her hands moved on their own accord as she prepared dinner. She could see herself moving, taking out the necessary pots and pans and utensils, but she could feel nothing. Only the jingling shards in her chest as she swayed from one place in the kitchen to the other.

Her ears heard the front door open and the sound of Tiffany’s breathing in her ear as she wrapped her arms around Jessica from behind. She heard the smack of a kiss against her temple.

“Mmm, pasta,” said Tiffany. Another kiss sounded, this time on her cheek. “I’m going to wash up,”

-/-/-/-

“How was work?”

“The same,”

“Did the chief editor call back?”

Jessica shook her head. “Not yet,”

“Ah,” Tiffany chewed.

The clatter of forks on porcelain and glasses clinking on hard wood filled the air between empty conversations. Jessica kept her eyes on her plate, not trusting herself to look up at the gaze that had been watching her ever since they settled for dinner.

An empty glass hit the table. Jessica finally looked up.

“Done?” She asked.

“Mhm,”

Jessica got up, taking their plates to the sink.

She didn’t miss the sadness in Tiffany’s eyes.

Tiffany was always smarter than Jessica.

She knew she knew.

-/-/-/-

Jessica saw shapes and lights flicker from the TV that played before them. Tiffany was laying with her head in her lap while Jessica’s hands were rested, unmoving at her sides. She felt a shift against her thighs that drew her attention. Big, brown eyes looked up at her and Jessica sighed.

“Jessi,“

Picking up the remote, she clicked the screen to mute and set it aside as Tiffany sat up.

“You promised to always tell me the truth right? No matter how much it might hurt me, you promised you would always tell me the truth.”

“Yes,”

“So tell me the truth, Tiffany,”

She waited, eyes unblinking as Tiffany shifted uncomfortably, her teeth chewing on her bottom lip, and brow creasing more and more as tears began to form just along her lids.

“I’m sorry,”

Jessica looked away from her. She pushed against the couch to get up when a hand gripped her, holding her down.

“How long?”

“Jessica, please,”

“How long, Tiffany?”

“It was only once…” Her eyes shifted away and Jessica already knew. “That one night I- that was it,”

Jessica swallowed down the lump in her throat. She knew exactly which night. The night Tiffany woke her up and took her in the most affectionate of ways Jessica hadn’t felt since the prime of their relationship.

The fact it had come about from the guilt of being in bed with another woman made Jessica’s stomach whirl.

“What about today?”

“We didn’t-“

“I saw you,”

“I pushed her away. Did you see that?”

“Did you do that when she had her hand down your pants?”

“Jessica!” Tiffany winced.

Jessica looked away, her teeth clenching hard. She didn’t want to cry. She didn’t want to start feeling. Not right now. The numbness had been painful, but feeling was so much more.

“Jessica, I’m sorry. You don’t know how sorry I am,”

“I don’t understand,” she muttered, her eyes seeking out anywhere to look but at the woman beside her. It didn’t help. Everything surrounding her reminded her of Tiffany. “I thought you-”

“Don’t you dare say it,” Tiffany snapped. “Don’t you even say it. You know I love you. You know I love you so much. So much,”

“Where was that love when you were with her?”

“Baby…”

“Were you drunk?” Jessica wheeled around on her. She searched through that face hoping for a yes. To be drunk, liquor tainting judgment, maybe it would ease the hurt a little. But only Tiffany’s silence reached her ears. Jessica crumbled.

“Oh, my god,”

“We had been drinking that night. To celebrate the team,” Tiffany tried, reaching out for Jessica. Her hand clutched air as Jessica lifted off the couch, pacing the floor. “We did. Just not…not a lot,”

Jessica bristled. “How was it?”

“Don’t,”

“What did she give you that you don’t have with me? Huh?”

“Jessi,” Tiffany’s voice cracked, the pain in it chipping off the piece of Jessica’s already fragmented heart. Her eyes spilt over with tears. “You know you’re my everything,”

“No, I’m not,” Jessica scoffed, hand dragging across her face to clear away her own tears. “Not anymore,”

-/-/-/-

“Is something wrong?” asked Hyoyeon.

Jessica frowned. It was supposed to be her old roommate’s night. They were out celebrating with glasses of alcohol and jjajangmyeon like the old days for Hyoyeon’s job offer in China to be a personal trainer for some of the big up and coming idols.

It was good news. It was better than good news, but Jessica could only fight through the torment in her mind about the woman sitting next to her, feeling so close yet so far away, for so long. She was worn down. She didn’t want to try anymore.

“Just tired,” Jessica offered, adding a yawn for good effect. “And maybe a little drunk,” though she wasn’t. She was the designated driver though she wanted nothing more than to drown herself in the liquor Tiffany had.

The argument they had on the way to the restaurant still burned fresh in Jessica’s mind and held a steady hold on her heart, squeezing out what remained of it.

“Unnie, you seem sad,” Seohyun stated plainly.

Tiffany drew her eyes away from her half eaten plate of noodles, forcing on the eye smile. Jessica wondered when Tiffany became such a good actress.

“Never,” she took a long drink from her glass to hide a grimace. “I’m really excited for you, Hyo. This is huge.”

“Isn’t it?” The blonde narrowed her eyes, flickering her concerned gaze to Jessica. Jessica diverted her eyes to her own plate.

“But why China?” Asked Seohyun. “There are plenty of idols here,” Jessica’s younger sister was an up and coming one herself.

“China made the phone call,” Hyoyeon shrugged. Jessica shifted on the pillow, drawing her hand away from the one that sought hers outs beneath the table. The rejection registered like a slap on Tiffany’s face. “Are you sure you two are okay?”

“I think I should get home,” Jessica murmured, dropping a couple of bills onto the table. “I won’t need change,”

She got up from the table, hurrying outside, taking gulps of lukewarm air into her lungs that had felt on the verge of collapsing.

The door banged open and closed behind her, followed by a pair of hands on her shoulders. Jessica shrugged out of them.

“Jessi,”

“I can’t do this,” she sucked in a shrill breath, spinning to face a buzzed Tiffany. “I can’t lie to them – I can’t lie to myself.”

“We’re not lying to anyone. We’re working through this,”

“Are we? Because you still spend more time at that pool with her than you do with me,”

“I can’t help that my job requires me to spend so much time there. That doesn’t mean I’m cheating on you. Jessica, try to be understanding.”

“I am trying. I’m trying so hard, but the more I try, the harder it gets to try and wrap my mind around the fact that the woman who claimed to be mine, and only mine, gave a part of her to someone else,”

“It was a mistake. People make mistakes,”

“Maybe I made one agreeing to be with you in the first place,”

“Jessi!”

Eyes of spectators came into focus in the faces of two concerned friends standing just outside the restaurant clutching to-go cartons in their hands.

Hyoyeon moved first, her piercing eyes shooting into Tiffany as she took Jessica by the arm, holding it firm in her grasp and hovering like a protective lioness over her cub.

“You’re coming home with me tonight, Sica,” she sneered. Jessica didn’t mind not arguing. She knew Hyoyeon would allow nothing otherwise and a part of her was glad. “Seohyun?”

The maknae nodded sadly, resting her hand on Tiffany’s shoulder. “I’ll take you home, unnie,”

“Jess…” Tiffany’s voice called out pathetically.

“Let’s go, unnie,” Seohyun tugged on the shoulder of her jacket. Reluctantly, Tiffany allowed Seohyun to steer them away and down the walkway while eyes continued to glance back at her.

“Oh, Sica,” Hyoyeon sighed, pulling a shaking Jessica into her arms.

“Hyo,” she shuddered into her, gripping the back of her shirt. “Hyo,” she begged with her voice for Hyoyeon to absorb the ache out of her.

“I know, baby, I know,” she smoothed her hair with a hand. “I know,”

-/-/-/-

She sought out revenge, understanding, and self-satisfaction on the night of the swim team’s most important district meet. She found it in the form of a graduate student studying biochemistry in the back of the coffee shop. Jessica wandered over to her table to the hum a guest indie band playing ambient music in the background and under the curious eyes of Sooyoung watching her from the register.

Her name was Goo Hara as read off her student ID. Jessica bought her a coffee to help her stay awake and offered to drive her back to campus to avoid taking public transit at such a late hour.

They didn’t make it out of the parking lot, or to the front seats rather. She let Hara spin her around, pin her to the car, and take her lips her as if she didn’t put every intention into the power of that kiss, Jessica would have slapped her away and ditched her in the lot.

But Jessica welcomed it, and she welcomed Hara into the backseat. She allowed eager hands to search out parts of her that she had only let one person her entire life touch. She agreed to a grinning mouth to explore her milky skin and she gave into the nature of her body as it shuttered under those moon like eyes that watched her spill over that edge.

She didn’t have to say a thing when she walked into the house that still buzzed from the aftermath of the relay team’s party Jessica hadn’t been home for.

Tiffany, legs curled up beneath a blanket on the couch, could see it in her eyes. Much like the way Jessica could smell it drifting in the air around them, strangling her, slapping her in the face, taking every one of her intentions that night with Hara and throwing them to the curb.

The two had gotten careless. Jessica could see the remains of a mark just below the collar of Tiffany’s baggy shirt. One she hadn’t left. Jessica never left her marks in places for others to see. The fact that this woman had – had marred that beautiful flesh - was a stab to the hilt of the knife in her chest.

“How was your night?” Asked Tiffany.

“Good. The meet?”

“We won,”

Jessica nodded curtly. “Get out,”

Sorrowful eyes looked up at her shocked. “Jess-“

She shook her head. There was no way she’d be talked into anything else now. “Get out right now,”

“Baby, let’s talk,”

“No more lies, Tiffany. I don’t want to hear you lie to me again because I know,” Jessica sucked in a shaky breath. The power put into her after the backseat of that car left her. “I know you’re not sorry and neither am I.”

Tiffany’s face cracked, her eyes creasing as her tears spilt out. Her mouth opened, a breath filling her lungs to speak more words. More words that Jessica did not want to hear.

“Get out,”

Teeth clicked as jaw’s shut. Fabric rustled as a body got up. Jessica heard the sound of hangers and zippers before she heard Tiffany pad back into the living room in sandals and a hoodie thrown over her shirt and shorts.

Stepping to the side, Jessica presented the door to her. Tiffany blinked from it to her, locking their eyes. Jessica tried her best to see into them. She tried to feel the sorry pleads that were screaming from those warm pools, but they could never reach. They were weak and they were empty. Each sorry was just another word spoken to fill the time before Tiffany went and did it again.

Jessica dropped her gaze. Her hand gripped the doorknob, twisting it and letting it swing open to the dark night.

She kept her eyes downcast, only seeing Tiffany’s feet walk along the carpet toward the door. A hand touched her cheek, steadying lips that kissed the top of Jessica’s head.

“You know I love you,” Tiffany muttered.

“Get out,”

The hand dropped from her cheek and feet crossed the threshold.

Jessica slammed the door.

Jessica crumbled to the floor.

Jessica cried, her voice peaking to the ceiling and reaching to the heavens at the swarm of pain that surged through her. Through the wood she could hear Tiffany’s loud sobs coming from just the other side. So broken and raw and ragged.

She heard hands hitting the door, knocking. She heard the voice begging. She heard Tiffany do everything in her power for Jessica to open up and let her back in.

But Jessica had learned to be strong over the years. For Tiffany she had learned to be strong.

Now it was time to be strong for herself.

The door never opened.

Funny how they worked so hard to have a bless from mr Hwang. Everything just shattered. I don't know why Tiff cheated on Jessica. But I just hope Jessica won't getting back together with her. I mean I don't think Tiff love her. If she does, she won't cheating on her. Twice.
For now, I wish jessica find someone else and I don't want Tiff back in Jessi's life. I hate cheaters.
I'm glad Jessica decided to broke up with tiff.

Update soon! And i really wonder why on the earth Tiff cheat on jessica if she truly love Jessi. I mean she's not drunk that time. I hope I can get my answer soon.

I foresee a sad sad ending for Jeti in this.

Yet I find myself drawn to it.

Jessica will probably find solace in Sooyoung. That's the mending of the heart right? Moving on from that I'd-thought-it'd-be-forever-but-hey-reality-ain't-so-nice first love.

I seldom comment on LJ because I'm too lazy to Log-in and type my UN and PW lol but I wouldn't pass up my chance to comment on this beautiful and delicate fanfic. Very well written and organized. I love you already :x

I was dumbfounded when I read this chapter. I thought this fic will end happily on Chapter 3 (I thought this just a short collection lol like a Three-shot fic or something) but then lo and behold! JeTi drama and angst. I love itttt!

I wonder why Tiffany cheated on Jessica...twice. Once is already a mistake, okay I'll forgive Fany for that but cheating on Jessi for the 2nd time?! Wow I think something is really wrong with Tiffany here.

Can't wait to read the rest of your chapters! Continue being amazing! Cheers! ♥

Aight. I'm bristling. I don't usually leave comments either, this is my first actually. But I'm sad, angry AND ANGRY, it's 5am and I need to express. I knew this loss chapter was coming up but I was hoping it wouldn't happen lol or at least in a kinder way.

There's a lot of fics where a character really treats love interest wrongly, but honestly most of those I wanted JeTi (/other pairing) together anyway and didn't care too much. We're led to believe there has to be a goodness in them and a reasoning for their actions. I'm actually unsure whether I want that here. It should be a no-brainer. But the reason why I do want them together is that their beginning in the previous parts were just so damn good. They fought through so much, and won even. And uh, I love JeTi. Though now I'm questioning everything and Tiffany's actual faithfulness. I'm curious whether her dad will come back into play.

It was worse because the relationship was seemingly going well. i.e. the cheater isn't seeking solace/comfort/something more from another due to their broken/abusive/crappy relationship, nor are they weak. Tiffany had it pretty good in contrast and it just seems selfish, greedy. When it happens more than once especially. It just can't be justified (at the present time). Agh.

Tiffany really has no excuse. Once, okay. Twice and still coming home, asking questions like it's nothing. I just can't. GIRL WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU- HOW CAN YOU- WHY WOULD YOU- FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
So... any chance of saving once-beautiful JeTi and in extension, my broken JeTi heart? GET OUT TIFFANY

Lovely fic by the way, thanks for the relatively quick updates.

i knew for some reason that the unsettled feelings and talk between jeti about why tiffany was so adamant on being just a coach would pull a string on their relationship. T__T
sunny probably got the best side of tiffany, when she hit that sensitive side. a side of her that still wanted to be a swimmer so bad. she and sunny shared that same passion and sunny can always lure tiffany in with that. comforting her side that still hold on to her dream as a swimmer.

but still, even though jessica probably can't understand her like how sunny can, i still feel that tiffany only love jessica.

my heart is crushed (since i love jeti so much). the jeti love was found, then tested, and now i think it's lost? i can only pray that the mending of the heart was meant for jeti to get back together. :(

I'm glad that Jessica did what she did. What Tiffany did was just inexcusable to me. I just hope Jessica would not easily succumb and won't either go crawling back or easily accept Tiffany back without her actually proven to be trusted again.

Date: 2013-01-31 10:12 am (UTC)

most people probably side on the people who has been cheated, but i kinda feel more for tiffany. not saying that what tiffany did is right, which is completely wrong. cheating, is never right and always sinful. ALWAYS. it's inexcusable.
let's just say, i had a history almost similar like tiffany. i am stupid, i regretted it everyday, i lived with pain and regrets, i earned the punishment for what i did. regrets is the worst feel.

but most of all, i learned through it and learned to cherish her even more.
that's why, if tiffany really loves jessica, i hope she will prove it. win her back, swoon her, mend her heart and love her even more.

never regrets loving someone more than that person loves you.
just remember that the one who gives is always better than the one who receives.
but it's a blessing to have a relationship that both are mutually giving and receiving. :)

more lying and cheating please

From: [identity profile] snsdholic.livejournal.com
I can't say I'm surprise. I had a hunch that one of them was gonna cheat, I just didn't want to believe it. They were so in love... Thought their love could overcome any wants for lust, but then that wouldn't be life (human nature)... But still mad at Tiff. Why? After everything they went through... Jessica was just as understanding as Sunny! But I'm also disappointed in Jess for getting revenge, it's equally as bad. But if you never go through obstacles in a relationship, you'll never exactly know how much you love the person. Although a bit drastic of an obstacle, it makes sense. I always knew it'd be Tiff who cheats first because Jess just seems like she loves her more, but then that tiny, little SooSic moment made me think Jess might cheat first just for me to realize I should've sticked with my first theory, lol. Anywho, I basically just ranted, lol. Thank you for updating quickly! I hope you'll update soon again! ^^

hello.

i would like to thank you for giving us this fantastic story. i haven't had this much fun reading jeti in a long time. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

however, i have to say i spotted a few misspellings (about 3) and i think i only found them because i was asked to "read between the lines". it is really, really minor and tiny, just some of those write/right things. (uh. hello, betas. but ofc, they are good friends and are paid with rainbows and fluff, i understand.) i apologise if any of that offended you. not my intention.

finally, i have read the chapters at least twice, the most recent one thrice and i have some hunches as to what Stephanie's reason is (she can't be that petty, right? hmm...) but i'd rather wait for you to tell us. plus, being wrong sucks.

again, thanks for this wonderful bit of writing.

ps. i am hoping that you'd write more jeti, preferably fluff. :3 probably not going to happen, but it's nice to hope, yes?
